AHMED AL HASHMI
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
Ahmed Al Hashmi is a collector based in the United Arab Emirates and collects modern sports watches. He talks about his addictive nature to collecting things that draw his interest.

– What is your name and/or the alias you would like to go by?
Ahmed Al Hashmi
– What country are you based in?
United Arab Emirates
– As a collector, what do you like to collect and what started your collection
Mostly any attainable, contemporary, Swiss watch that grabs my attention, and that is usually based on aesthetics. I have a specific taste of colours, shapes, materials and different types of finishing. I would not usually go for the trendy ones (Nautilus, GMT, Daytona etc.) I love a watch that speaks to me and my personal taste. Currently, I feel that the direction is towards the independent brands. The watch that started my collection is a Rolex Yacht Master 116622 with a blue sunburst dial. It has been with me for more than 5 years and it’s currently my favourite travel watch.
– Could you further explain why you collect?
Frankly, I have a very addictive personality. The addiction of watches has started growing after I’ve attained my first watch. The more I’ve learned about watches and horology, the more addicted I got and the more watches I’ve purchased. I’ve had a few random purchases that I eventually sold. However, I know today what I really like and I take time to think deeply and carefully before I buy a watch.
– Have you ever considered collecting something else other than what you already collect?
I have always tried to like and understand vintage watches but I’m never convinced to buy one. I don’t really like “old stuff”.

– Would you care to share any not-so-great collecting experiences?
I wouldn’t call them collecting experiences, but I’ve bought a couple of Panerais and regretted both. I ended up selling them, thankfully. My Hublots served their purposes for a while but I found reason to let them go later on.
– As a collector, who would you say inspires you and why?
A collector that goes by the username @horologyancienne on Instagram. I think he owns the most distinctive collection on the platform. He has deep knowledge and indescribable passion. A great writer and photographer as well.
– What’s your opinion on reselling items you have bought for your personal collection?
My opinion on reselling anything for anything is neutral. Every person has the choice to buy and sell whatever he/she wants. However, a collector is a collector and a dealer is a dealer. I’ve sold watches to buy other watches, and sold watches because I didn’t want them anymore. I’ve also sold another item to buy a watch once. But I’ve never bought a watch to sell it for profit in the future, that would be dealing.
– As a collector, have you inspired or convinced others to also start collecting?
I don’t know if I have inspired any of my instagram followers to start collecting, but there’s one family member that I’m sure was inspired to collect because of me. I still convince him to buy some watches to this day and his collection has been growing beautifully.
– And our final questions will be, will you ever stop collecting?
I might hold for a while, sometimes there’s not so much to buy, sometimes you just cannot buy what you really want. However, I don’t think I will ever stop collecting as long as the watches, the desire and the ability is there.
