Louis Vuitton X Supreme Jacket

Established on Lafayette Street in 1994 – exactly 140 years after Louis Vuitton founded his Malletier in Paris, Supreme has become a New York City staple. The skateboard clothing brand and the French fashion house collaborate for the first time for Fall-Winter 2017, creating a capsule of Louis Vuitton X Supreme Jacket collection amongst other fashion items such as sneakers which we have also covered here.

The rumours, which were doing the rounds in the fashion industry for quite some time, were first addressed in January with its menswear runway show. Kim Jones, LV’s menswear director says, “You can’t have the conversation of New York men’s wear without Supreme right now, because it’s such a massive global phenomenon.”

The collaboration epitomises the cross-cultural mood of both the city, and this collection. A new Monogram variation is interrupted with Supreme’s iconic Box Logo.

This new emblem appears as a motif in the fabrics of a range of garments, including classic pale washed Japanese denim, camouflage jacquard, and fil coupé, sometimes appearing in a cognac and chocolate colourway that recalls the original 1896 Monogram canvas.

Although the LV Supreme collection features several accessories and clothing items, the one that stands apart is its Louis Vuitton X Supreme Jacket collection range. Artistic Director Kim Jones took a cue from uptown New York City style for the 2017 Fall-Winter runway denim jacket. The monogram jacket has the logos of both the collaborators and their names printed throughout the piece, much like LV’s trademark style. While the Louis Vuitton X Supreme jacket collection comes in four colours: Hot Red, Blue Denim, Black and Army camo print; the jacket is available in red and blue.

Interestingly, the collection doesn’t just offer one type of jacket. On the flip side, there are several designs available if you wish to go for Louis Vuitton X Supreme jacket – Leather baseball jacket, hooded jacket with fur, jacquard denim trucker jacket. Also available are jacquard denim chore coat and reversible trench coat. While the baseball jacket comes only in the red colour, the hooded jacket gives you the option of blue denim and army colours, just like the trucker jacket.

The limited one-off collection is not sold through Supreme’s brick and mortar stores or via any of the online platforms; but they will be available exclusively in Louis Vuitton stores. There are also plans of setting up separate stores in areas where both are popular. The X collection was opened to the public last month. Amusingly, since then a lot of people have started selling these Louis Vuitton X Supreme jackets on Ebay for as much as $5000!

While there are mixed opinions about the collaboration, it mostly seems like a win-win situation for both the parties. Louis Vuitton, which has been guarded about its products and audience, gets to make a mark among the millennials. By targeting them, LV also joins the bandwagon of brands majorly focusing on millennials. As for Supreme, it gets to collaborate with one of the world’s leading fashion houses and a financial boost as well.
