“What’s in a name?” Yes, in line with this famous Shakespeare quote, a New York based hotel has claimed to make the world’s most expensive omelette – The Zillion Dollar Lobster Frittata ! If you are having panicky thoughts about the omelette being a zillion dollars, relax and refer to Shakespeare’s quote again. As names can be misleading, this one doesn’t actually cost you a zillion dollars, rather a mega $1000. That’s actually paltry when you consider the grand name of the delicacy.
Available at Norma’s Restaurant in Le Parker Meridien hotel in New York, this luxurious dish a breakfast for the uber rich. By now you are pretty much aware of the fact that New York is the go to place if you wish to spend lavishly on luxurious items.
So what is it that makes this omelette stand out from its $10 peers? This time, the answer lies in the name. Packed with lobster weighing 4 ounces and caviar cream, it also contains six eggs and chives. The ingredients are special due to the flavour they give to the Frittata. Although most of the ingredients aren’t that expensive, it is the caviar which makes up nearly 80% of the total cost of the Frittata.
Contrary to general belief, the hotel actually doesn’t make much money off the Zillion Dollar Lobster Frittata. Rather, they sell it at about cost. The dish was launched way back in 2004 in the pre Instagram and food blogging era. Needless to say, expensive delicacies weren’t a trend back then. Not many people believed that such a dish actually exited and considered it more of a joke. However, with time, the dish became the hotel’s very own brand and in recent years a lot of people have followed suit by introducing ultra expensive dishes.
If you aren’t willing to spend the outlandish amount on the dish or if you are an enthusiastic chef, here’s how you can try it in your kitchen: Preheat oven to 375 degrees; beat eggs, chives and half of caviar cream in a bowl. In an omelette pan, add chopped claw meat, butter and saute 2 minutes. Now add the mixture of egg and simmer over for five minutes.
Simultaneously, cook the lobster tail in another saucepan for three minutes with some added butter. Now, wedge to arrange on top of the omelette, then finish cooking in the oven for two more minutes.
Spoon remaining sauce over the cooked omelette, spoon caviar on top and serve.
Also, this pompous serving of food is cooked only 12 times per year on average. A scaled down version of Zillion Dollar Lobster Frittata costs $100 and is far more popular, selling around 10 a month.
Of course, you cannot be having this as your morning breakfast everyday but it truly epitomizes the saying that your breakfast should always be like a king!
