Parmigiani Fleurier Bugatti Type 370

As a brand, Parmigiani Fleurier aren’t the most well known or popular amongst the tight-knit circles that make up our small collective watch community. But let us be frank, that’s kind of a good thing. Over-saturation, over-marketing and too much publicity in the long run doesn’t really work too well for prestigious and high-end brands (I’m not going to mention any names.. ahem…).

I enjoy brands who don’t shed too much light on what they do, instead relying upon their craftsmanship and finished products to do the talking. Parmigiani Fleurier are one of those ultra-rare brands that I have a fascination towards, and as such they have remained on my radar for quite some time. The Bugatti Type 370 is jut about as niche as it’s ever going to get as it has provided the brand with an exclusive partnership with one of the world’s greatest hyper car manufacturers, Bugatti.

Let us get one thing straight here, the Bugatti Type 370 isn’t for everyone. And I’m not taking about its restrictions due to price or obscure aesthetics. I’m talking about absolute exclusivity. The watch is about showcasing the best of the best in a package that’s not only unique, but also are fundamental personification of its wearer’s characteristics and traits. The Bugatti Type 370 screams presence, and sitting at just over 18mm tall and 52.5mm in length (but only 32.4mm wide), you’d be hard pressed to hide this 18k white gold (there are also other precious metal options) behemoth under a shirt cuff. But that’s not what this watch is for. The watch is meant to be seen. It wants you to roll up your silk shirt sleeves and hang your arm out of your Bugatti for the world to see. It wants peoples’ eyes drawn to the piece while you take a puff of your Montecristo cigar at a beach-side café. Its not there for subtly, humility or modesty. Its ostentatious, flamboyant and kind of aggressive. And that’s okay.

More specifically though, the 18k white gold case has six anti-reflective sapphire crystals (yep..), a unique individualized number engraved on the rear of the piece as well as a double-crown that the wearer can use with a special tool provided by Parmigiani Fleurier to wind the mechanism. There is an applied mother-of-pearl dial centre, applied baton indexes with luminescent coating and an 18k white gold base. The piece will sit comfortably on your wrist despite its odd shape by way of a Hermès leather strap with a folding buckle that’s been polish-finished.

The Bugatti Type 370 is powered by the PF370.01 which utilises an ingenious movement winding system which had to be specifically designed for the watch. This includes a special tool that I mentioned before which can wind the watch enough to provide the wearer with 10-days worth of power reserve.

The total process from a sketch to an actual product took about five years, and as such this piece carries with it Parmigiani Fleurier’s ethos and culture to perfection. While many of us may never see this piece in the flesh, I think its safe to say that it is as impressive as it is rare. It represents the absolute epitome of haute horlogerie and it looks damn while doing so. If only I were a billionaire.
